Description

Chemisty, design and culture collide in ‘Wonderland’ a short experimental film that gives the audience a sense of wonder about the beauty and ingenuity of science and design.

The film was commissioned by The Helen Storey Foundation to act as a catalyst for conversation between Chemist Professor Tony Ryan OBE and designer Helen Storey.

Using endoscopic probe cameras and underwater macro-lenses Pinny Grylls aimed to get ‘inside’ a series of chemical experiments in a lab in Sheffield University’s Chemistry Department. The experiments were the result of Tony and Helens’ attempt to find new ‘intelligent’ polymers that could solve some of the worlds humanitarian and environmental problems. Funded by the EPSRC the experiments resulted in first a collection of clothes that could, through a multitude of live and in-situ chemical reactions respond to the needs of the wearer, and secondly a collection of products that would behave in the same way including a ‘disappearing bottle’ that knew when it was empty and dissolved into an inert substance that could be used to grow seeds housed in the cap.
